L&MR Open Third Class Carriage Pack (R40102)
< Click here for more details >
< Click here for less details >
Having established the concepts of first and second class rail travel, it was only a matter of time before railway companies created a lower fare ‘third class’ for the carriage of the working classes, especially in the densely populated industrial areas. Companies such as the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Railway, the Manchester and Leeds Railway and the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne & Manchester Railway all used open third class carriages, mostly for standing passengers, but sometimes fitted with a rudimentary bench (or benches). The L&MR considered the possibility of creating a third class as early as 1839, due largely to market pressure from the MB&BR and M&LR, but the directors were afraid that, with its lower fares, it would draw passengers away from the first and second class trains.
The introduction of third class travel on the L&MR dates to April 1844, when the Board ordered new enclosed second class coaches to replace the older ‘blue boxes’, which were then downgraded to third class. The first of the L&MR third class train services ran in October 1844, departing from Manchester at 06:30 and from Liverpool at 18:30.

LNER Coronation Brake Third & Kitchen Third Articulated Coach Pack (R40223)
< Click here for more details >
< Click here for less details >
Named to mark the coronation of King George VI, 'The Coronation' was for a time the LNER's flagship express passenger service. The train ran between London and Edinburgh in as little time as 6 hours. The service was formed by a rake of four pairs of specially designed streamlined coaches with the addition of a streamlined observation car other than in the winter, when the short period of daylight precluded the views. One service was run in each direction each day, the down service departing London for Edinburgh at 16:00pm, and the up service leaving Edinburgh at 16:30pm. Services were usually pulled by an A4 class locomotive, commonly liveried to match the rest of the train.
The coaches were based upon the successful Silver Jubilee design and featured extensive attempts to reduce drag and increase comfort including the use of articulated pairs of coaches sharing bogies which limited the gap between the coaches, and aerodynamic underframe skirting.
In total, 4 sets of coaches were built plus the two observation cars. 2 sets were used for 'Coronation' (and 'Talisman'; the return service) 1 set for the West Riding Limited service to Leeds, and 1 spare set which could be used for any of the preceding services. After the war, the services were not resumed, and the sets were split up.
After a fire in 1951, additional doors were added to the twin sets to reduce the time needed to disembark in emergencies. All coaches lost their underframe skirting to aid maintenance and reduce unnecessary weight.
Formation (observation car and locomotive both turned and arranged depending upon direction of travel):
Brake Third (A) + Kitchen Third (Twin) (B)
Open First (C) + Open First (Twin) (D)
Open Third (E) + Kitchen Third (Twin) (F)
Open Third (G) + Brake Third (Twin) (H)

EWS Business Coach Pack (R40374)
< Click here for more details >
< Click here for less details >
The idea of the managers train, business train or inspection saloon is far from a new one, the first examples being employed by some of the earliest of the pre-grouping railway companies. In the modern era EWS' management train is a version of this rather old fashioned idea. For much of the modern era, EWS has operated a push-pull managers train and a 'business train'.
This business train, despite its name, rarely operated as a single train with sets of coaches often being employed on extra services around the country, an example being on services laid on during major UK based sporting events and such.
The business train utilised the then rather old Mk2 coaches in a special EWS maroon livery and would be found being hauled by all manner of EWS liveried traction.
